Which visa do you need for medical treatment in China?
For any planned procedure, consultation series, or hospital admission, the M visa is the correct category. It covers travel to China for medical treatment as well as commercial and medical activities. A tourist (L) visa or a short visa-free transit window may be enough for a very brief, simple visit for some nationalities, but it is not designed for treatment and many hospitals will ask for documentation that an M visa application provides. When in doubt, apply for the M visa.
How to apply, step by step
1. Choose a hospital & confirm your case
Identify the right hospital or international department for your condition and share your medical summary so they can confirm they can treat you and propose dates.
2. Get the invitation / appointment letter
The hospital (or an authorized medical-service agency) issues an invitation or admission letter confirming the planned treatment. This is the key supporting document for the M visa.
3. Prepare your application
Complete the visa form with a recent photo and gather your passport, the invitation letter, proof of funds, travel itinerary, and any medical records the consulate requests.
4. Submit at the visa center
Apply at your local Chinese visa application center (CVASC) or embassy. Standard processing is around four working days, with express and rush options usually available.
5. Travel & extend if needed
Enter China within the visa's validity. If treatment runs long, the hospital's international department can help you extend at the local Exit-Entry Administration before the visa expires.
Requirements and fees vary by nationality and consulate. Always confirm the latest details with your local Chinese embassy or visa application center before you apply.
